Charles William Caldwell, 91, of Greenfield passed away peacefully at his home with his wife by his side on Friday, April 22, 2016.
Charley was born Nov. 2, 1924 in Hillsboro to the late Lewis Rowe Caldwell and Nellie Christina (Johnston) Caldwell.
He was a longtime member of the Fall Creek Friends Church, Hillsboro. He was a 1943 graduate of Hillsboro High School and was inducted into United States Army after graduation. He served with the 47th Medical Battalion and 1st Armored Division as a litter bearer and ambulance driver. Battlefield experience included Anzio Beach, Italy and Rome, Italy, then returned to the United States through Maurice, France. He married Elizabeth Ann Vance. He farmed and worked other jobs for many years.
In addition to his wife of 69-1/2 years, Elizabeth Ann Vance Caldwell, he is survived by four daughters, Janice Sue (Jim) Noble of Cincinnati, LTC (retired) Martha Ellen Caldwell of El Paso, Texas, Pastor Margaret (Peggy) Caldwell of Elizabethtown, Ind. and Chris (Brady) Tolbert of Greenfield; five grandchildren, Jenny (Mitch) Duff, Jackie (Jeff) Marsala, Amy Wilt, Jon Adam Nice and Casey Cruea; seven great-grandchildren, Stephen and Bekah Duff, Emily and Katie Marsala, Ryan and Jacob Wright and Abby Boldman; a brother-in-law Orville (Bill) (Dorthy) Vance Jr.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 27, at 11 a.m. at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Pastor H. Scott Latimer of Fall Creek Friends Church and Pastor Margaret (Peggy) Caldwell of Sandcreek-Azalia Friends Church will officiate. Burial will follow at the New Market Baptist Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 26, from 5-8 p.m.
