Capt. Robert F. 'Bud' Zurface

Capt. Robert F. “Bud” Zurface, 77, of Greenfield, passed away Friday, Dec. 26, 2014. 

He passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by his daughters. 

He was born Sept. 14, 1937, the son of Robert H. and Mary E. (Cross) Zurface. 

A lifelong resident of Greenfield, he was a 1955 graduate of McClain High School. He earned his certificate in mathematics in 1970, a certificate in physics in 1971 and graduated cum laude from West Coast University in 1972 with his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. 
 
He served 20 years in the United States Marine Corps and retired with the rank of captain. During his service, he served six tours in Vietnam. He was recognized for excellence in marksmanship as a sharpshooter and was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service on Nov. 6, 1980. Upon retirement, he returned to his hometown of Greenfield and worked for Hobart in Hillsboro. He taught at Pickaway-Ross Joint Vocational School, was employed in grant programming for Fayette County Community Action. He retired from the Private Industry Council 17 in Ross County in 2004. 
 
He was active in the Concerned Veterans of Greenfield and directed the organization’s Color Guard. 
 
He is survived by his four daughters, Susan M. Zurface of Hillsboro, Scynthia L. King of Greenfield, Mary Ellen (Shawn) McMurry of Greenfield, and Jo Ann (David) Blubaugh of Lewis Center; one sister, Sara Watts of Greenfield; seven grandchildren, PFC Roderick A. Zurface Daniels, Marissa S. Zurface Daniels, PV2 Joseph A. King, Joshua S. King, Kaitlyn M. S. King, Miles D. McMurry, and Audrey A. Blubaugh; and nieces and nephews. 
 
He was predeceased by his wife, Marie S. (Teti) Zurface on Sept. 21, 2012; his parents, Robert H. and Mary E. (Cross) Zurface; and one sister, Ola Jane (Barr) Zurface. 
 
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30 at the Murray-Fettro Funeral Home in Greenfield with the Rev. Terry Washburn officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenfield Cemetery with military rites to be performed by the Concerned Veterans of Greenfield. 
 
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of service with Veterans Appreciation Service to begin at 1 p.m. 

Donations may be made to any Veterans’ Services organization.
