Bertha (Ryan) Neel, 90, of Hillsboro, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022 at The Laurels of Hillsboro.
She was born June 4, 1932 in Greenfield, the daughter of the late Glen and Nelly Irene (Spurgeon) Ryan.
She married Charles Robert Neel on Nov. 16, 1954 and had two children, DeEtta Jean (1956) and Charles Edward (1963).
Bertha was a woman of God with a huge heart. She didn’t know a stranger and was loved by all who knew her. She cared for several generations of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Her love was selfless and pure. She liked playing bingo at the AmVets and loved to cook, shop and spend time with her family, and most importantly, she loved her scratch-off lottery tickets.
Bertha is survived by her son, Charles Neel of Lynchburg; her sister, Florence (Louis) Amann of Hillsboro; grandchildren, Kisha (Gerald) Swaney of Sabina, Heidi (Allen) Hoosier of Washington Court House, Sean DeLong of Portsmouth and Donald T. Neel of South Salem; great-grandchildren, Taylor (Tim) Ballard, Braydon, Damian and Logan Swaney, Jordan, Breaunna and Jenna Reitmire, Sean Michael, Paul, Lexi and Issabella DeLong, Wade Pendelton, Jakob Hoosier, and Kirk and Kahleesy Neel; great-great-grandchildren Jessasbelle, Charlotte, Jaxon, Jaceon, Maximus, Everleigh, James and Rosalie; and special friends Vicki, Ed and Megan Cirley, Michael DeLong, Michelle Otley, Wayne and Marlene Combs, Larry and Phyllis Leisure, Fulton and Bertha Terry and Genny Miller.
Bertha was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Robert Neel; her daughter, DeEtta Jean Neel; a grandson, Charles Tyler Neel; brothers, Clarence, Robert and Ralph Ryan; and a sister, Darlene Chapman.
The family would like to give a special thank-you to The Laurels of Hillsboro for their loving care and to the compassionate nurses and several aides who loved her and helped care for her – Dr. Gunderman, Sarah Fields, Alisha Burns, Missy Thompson, DeAnna Hargett and Elizabeth Sanctis.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022 at 1 p.m. at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Wayne Combs will officiate. Burial in the South Salem Cemetery will follow. Friends may call Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
