Every year, the Highland Soil & Water Conservation District holds a soil judging competition for the five FFA chapters in Highland County.
The competition allows the students to evaluate soil pits to determine soil properties, limitations, recommended conservation practices and appropriate land uses for either an Urban or Agricultural setting.
The 2026 Highland County Soils Competition was held Sept. 17 at the farm of Adam Vance with 100 students participating. Hailey Cornett from Greenfield McClain FFA was the top individual in the Urban category. Aubrey Baldwin from Greenfield McClain FFA was the top individual in the Ag category.
Cornett and Baldwin were presented with plaques at the SWCD Annual Meeting on Oct. 7. The awards were sponsored by Farm Credit Mid America.
