State, local crews continue road-clearing efforts

With as much as 17 inches of snow having fallen over the past 24 hours on highways in parts of Ohio, crews with the Ohio Department of Transportation are working through the weekend to keep road and bridges safe and passable.
Throughout the weekend, nearly 1,300 ODOT snowplows and vehicles have been combating ice and snow across the state - targeting interstates, U.S. and state routes, ramps and bridges.
During the overnight hours last night, crews were challenged by the fast rate of snowfall - two inches per hour in eastern Ohio. The heavy weight of the snow has also knocked down several trees, especially in the rural sections of the state.
ODOT continues to work with state and local law enforcement agencies to monitor traffic conditions. Several county sheriffs have declared snow emergencies, asking motorists to stay off the road as much as possible.
The reduction in traffic this weekend has allowed roadways to quickly be cleared of snow and treated with salt or other ice-melting material. With weather forecasters predicting continued cold temperatures and high winds, ODOT will also focus on areas often impacted by blowing snow.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution and avoid travel when possible. Drivers who choose to travel this weekend are reminded: Ice and Snow… Take It Slow. Place extra safety equipment in your car, including a flashlight, water and blankets.
