New Directions of Greenfield is gearing up for their 17th annual telethon, which will be held Thursday, Jan. 28 from 7-9 p.m.

New Directions, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last October, serves young adults in grades 7-12. Students attending New Directions programs are involved in a number of non-denominational church activities, including Bible studies, volunteering, and leadership
training, according to the organization's Web site. New Directions is designed to appeal to teenagers as a positive environment for group events and fun activities such as video games, pool, foosball, and music.

This year's telethon, hosted by Tati Cunningham, Terry Staten, and Brad Barber, will be broadcast on Time Warner Cable's Channel 3 for the Greenfield area and on WVNU Lite 97.5 FM. The telethon will be held in the McClain High School television studio, said Mike Anderson, New Directions' Director of Youth Ministries. Students involved in New Directions will be interviewed during the two-hour telethon, and adult volunteers will share stories about their work with New Directions. Anderson said that several musical numbers will also be featured. A prayer room, which will be open to the public, will be set up in the teacher's lounge of the Greenfield Elementary for the duration of the telethon.

The annual telethon, which Anderson said is the "biggest fundraiser of the year" for New Directions, raises funds for operating expenses and provides the ministry with extra funds to "reach out to students in need."

"It's always been a great success," said Anderson. "It's also an opportunity for us to give a report on the good things God is doing."

In addition to preparing for the telethon, the ministry of New Directions is working to prepare their new building at the old Freshour's Video Store in Greenfield. Located at 251 Jefferson Street, this new location marks a fresh start for the ministry after their former building was damaged in 2008's major windstorm associated with Hurricane Ike. Anderson, who said that volunteers are currently working on finishing the drywall and then moving on to painting and sanding, said that he expects the building to be completely done in the next three to four weeks. If anyone would like to volunteer to help complete the construction work on the new building, Anderson said that "every little bit helps" and all assistance is appreciated. A special addition to this year's telethon will be a slideshow of pictures from the building project, and Anderson said that they hope to hold an open house when the building is finished.

New Directions is hoping to raise $20,000 with the Jan. 28 telethon.

"That would be a definite blessing," Anderson said, adding that donations and pledges are already pouring in. With just under two weeks left until the telethon, the ministry had already raised half of their goal amount.

"God is good," Anderson said.
