Hillsboro City Auditor Gary Lewis and former Ohio RPAC (Realtors Political Action Committee) chairperson and National Association of Realtors RPAC Hall of Fame member Barbara Lach were the guest speakers Thursday at the monthly meeting of the Highland County Board of Realtors, at the Highland County Senior Citizen Center.
Lewis discussed his personal "adventures in real estate," local water and sewer rates, unfunded mandates by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), costs related to upgrading the Hillsboro Wastewater Treatment Plant, as well as the city's fiscal concerns.
"The city is in a financial crunch," Lewis said. "We're not immune by any means to what other cities have gone through."
Lewis explained that he is the fiscal messenger for the city administration and its various departments. Lewis said the city is obligated to have a balanced budget and it will.
In her brief discussion with local Realtors, Lach reviewed local participation in RPAC. In 2004, Lach said, Highland County had eight RPAC members. The next year, Highland County had 71 members. In 2008, Highland County reached its peak of 75 RPAC members, Lach said.
The Highland County Board of Realtors has 103 members and Lach stressed the importance of 100-percent participation in RPAC.
"You owe it to yourself to be an RPAC member," Lach said. "Nationally, there are 1.3 million members. If we all came together before Congress, they would have to listen to us. Your voice has to be heard (in Congress)."
Lach also discussed federal issues before the Supreme Court and regulations that can be costly to homeowners and private contractors, particularly the new lead-based paint requirements.
In other business, Highland County Board of Realtors President Risa Boone introduced new member Steve Cowdrey of Real Living Classic Real Estate.
Jill Yochum discussed summer fundraisers, including the silent auction and the duck races, which will pit a team of Realtors versus a team of affiliate members. The team that raises the most money will be served lunch by the members of the losing team at the August meeting.
This week's lunch was sponsored by Susan Davis and Midwest Title.
The next monthly meeting will be held at the Highland House Museum in Hillsboro.
