Stephen D. Iseman, Ph.D., a professor celebrated for combining academic training with hands-on career preparation, was awarded the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) 2009 Outstanding Educator of the Year Award at the PRSA 2009 International Conference in San Diego.
“To be recognized as the outstanding educator of the year from the vast number of dedicated and talented public relations educators from across the nation speaks volumes about this rarefied honor,” said Joice Truban Curry, PRSA 2009 Honors and Awards Committee chair, and president and CEO of the San Diego-based c3 Communications, Inc. “Nobody deserves it more than Dr. Iseman, an educator who is so highly respected for his work and commitment to the public relations profession by students and colleagues alike. PRSA is proud to recognize his contributions by naming him the 2009 Outstanding Educator of the Year.”
Based in Ada, Dr. Iseman is professor of Communication Arts/Public Relations at Ohio Northern University (ONU), as well as director of the Public Relations Program. Prior to teaching, Dr. Iseman spent 25 years as a public relations executive serving academic institutions in senior positions, including director of College Relations at Ohio Dominican College and director of Public Relations at Saint Francis College.
Known to students as “Dr. I,” Dr. Iseman was previously assistant professor in the School of Journalism at Ohio State University, and also taught at Ohio Dominican College and Upper Iowa University. He continues to remain active in public relations practice as a consultant to Fahlgren Mortine Public Relations. Earlier in his career, he taught photography at Wilmington College. He remains an active professional photographer who occasionally exhibits his work.
“I am delighted to receive the PRSA Outstanding Educator Award, and honored to be counted among a group that includes so many of my role models, mentors and heroes,” said Dr. Iseman. “I’ve always tried to help students learn what they need to know to be successful in our business, working hard to stay connected with the profession and guiding students even after they leave the classroom. I never thought I did anything different that any good professor would do.”
Dr. Iseman takes a multifaceted, integrated approach to education, one that encourages real-life application of theories to practice. His teaching methods go beyond classroom work to include internships, networking and participation in professional organizations. Described as a bridge builder between academia and public relations practice, Dr. Iseman is known for his dedication to students’ ultimate career success. He actively maintains connections with practicing professionals and engages their input and involvement in his students’ education.

He is widely recognized for his knowledge and experience in building a quality public relations program. His ONU program is one of only 19 in the world to hold the Certified for Education in Public Relations designation from PRSA.
Iseman also serves as faculty adviser to the ONU Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). He has been instrumental in making the Chapter a PRSSA powerhouse – with members serving on the national PRSSA board, including two national presidents back to back, presenting at national conference and achieving a variety of nationally presented awards.
