County unemployment rate drops to 17.1 percent

The jobless rate decreased in 87 of Ohio's 88 counties in April, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, with Highland County's rate down to 17.1 percent, down more than a percent from March's estimate of 18.3 percent. 

Six counties had unemployment rates above 15 percent during April, including Clinton County, with the highest rate at 17.7 percent, followed by Highland, 17.1; Pike, 15.6; Noble, 15.5; Morgan, 15.1; and Meigs, 15.5 percent.

Adams County had the state's largest drop in unemployment, from 16.5 percent in March to 14.3 percent in April.

In other neighboring county's Ross County is at 12.6 percent; Brown County is at 12.9 percent, Fayette County's rate is 12. 1 percent; 

Eight counties had unemployment rates below 9.0 percent in April. The counties with the lowest rates included Delaware and Geauga, both at 7.9 percent; Lawrence, 8.1; Holmes and Medina, 8.3; Lake and Mercer, 8.4; and Washington, 8.7 percent.
