Commissioners appoint Collins interim prosecutor

Highland County Commissioners Shane Wilkin, Tom Horst and Jeremy Shaffer appointed Anneka Collins as interim Highland County Prosecutor during a special meeting Monday, June 6.
Collins has been with the Highland County Prosecutor's office since March 2006. She received her law degree from the University of Dayton in 2005 and her bachelor's degree from Ohio State University in 2000.
Commissioners voted, 3-0, in favor of the appointment. Commissioners explained they were required to name an interim prosecutor in order for the office to continue to function, after the recent resignation of former Highland County Prosecutor Jim Grandey.
"This is not an endorsement for or against anyone," Horst said.
"The reason we didn't do it before was that we were trying to stay out of the political aspect of it," Wilkin said.
Wilkin said the commissioners were later informed that they had to make the appointment for the office to continue to operate.
According to Wilkin, who also serves on the Highland County Republican Party Central Committee, there are currently four applicants for the prosecutor's position: Collins, Lee Koogler, John Judkins and Chad Randolph. The central committee will accept applications until June 10, Wilkin said.
• In other business Monday, Horst reported that Third District Rep. Mike Turner donated two U.S. flags that have been flown above the Capitol Building to Highland County. The flags replace two older flags that were flown outside the county courthouse. In addition, VFW Post 9094 donated a new Ohio state flag to he county.
• Commissioners reported that the recent exterior renovation on the courthouse cupola was completed without tax dollars. The labor was paid through the special projects funds of Judge Rocky Coss and Judge Kevin Greer. Commissioners Shane Wilkin, Jeremy Shaffer and Tom Horst purchased the paint. Additionally, the Hillsboro Lowe's store donated paint for the courthouse railing. The work was completed by Tom and Maraget Horst.
