A cleaner Highland County

Lead Summary
By
-
Thanks to grant funds from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention, youth and adult volunteers from Highland County participated in a county-wide Litter Pickup campaign during the months of March, April and May.  Grant funds provided the supplies and equipment needed for the litter pickups, and the volunteers provided the labor.

From a scattering of cigarette butts on the sidewalk to a tire left in a weed-choked lot, litter is a blemish on the landscape.  It drags down a community’s image and is dismally contagious.  “Nothing promotes littering more than a place that is already littered” states Dori Bishop, Outreach Specialist from Highland County’s Recycling & Litter Prevention office.  “A cleaner community increases civic pride and makes Highland County a healthier, safer place to live, work and play.”

During March, April and May, 317 volunteers picked up 703 bags of litter from approximately 154 miles of roads, 6 miles of shoreline, numerous school grounds, playgrounds, fairgrounds and parks in Highland County.   Highland County has cleaner, more livable communities as a result of the efforts of these volunteers.  Highland County Recycling & Litter Prevention would like to thank the following groups and individuals for their participation in the campaign:

As we head into the summer months, the Litter Prevention office offers the following tips for keeping our county clean and beautiful:
Keep small bags handy – in your car, with your luggage, in your camping/boating/picnic gear.  Use these to stash trash until you find a trash can or take it home and dispose in your household trash.
Secure outdoor trash cans to keep wind and animals from spreading your trash around the neighborhood.
Set a civic-minded tone by refusing to litter, and occasionally pick up and properly dispose of litter you come across.
Know the law.  You can litter without knowing it.  The loose receipt that falls from your pocket, or the empty box that blows from the bed of your truck is litter.  Whether you intended it or not, it is litter and Ohio’s litter laws make no exceptions for accidents.
