Highland County Sheriff Ron Ward has informed the Highland County Board of Commissioners that effective Oct. 3, Deputy Chris Lengefeld has been promoted to Sgt./jail administrator at the Highland County Sheriff's Office.
Lengefeld will assume the day-to-day operations of the Jail Division of the Highland County Sheriff's Office, Ward said, and he will be the point of
contact with regard to such issues at the sheriff's office.
In other action, Ward also informed the commissioners of a potential security issue outside the Highland County Courthouse. In a letter to the board, Ward wrote:
"As you are aware, Ohio Revised Code 311.07 (a) gives the county sheriff authority at the courthouse and is tasked with security issues in and around
the county courthouse for the purpose of keeping citizens and county employees safe while coming and going on business in the courthouse.
"I have been working with both Common Pleas Court Judges Rocky A. Coss and Kevin L. Greer on various issues of public safety both in and outside
the courthouse over the past several years. One of the issues that has recently come to light is unattended baggage and belongings being left on the courthouse square. Sometimes these items are left for only a few hours and sometimes they are left overnight and beyond.
"Not knowing what these containers hold, and their close proximity to the walking public on the courthouse square, these items have become a public safety issue for me and my responsibilities as outlined in the Ohio Revised Code.
"I would ask that the board pass resolution as the property owners of the Highland County Courthouse and the real estate adjacent to the courthouse that would allow last enforcement with jurisdiction to impound unattended items left on the courthouse lawn or street adjacent to the courthouse in the interest of public safety and security of the Highland County Courthouse."
No immediate action was taken on the request.
Commissioners also approved the following resolutions, all by 3-0 votes, at their Oct. 6 board meeting:
• The authorization of a modification to the General Fund as follows: from County Miscellaneous, Group & Liability, to Commissioners, Other Expense, in the amount of $5,000.
• The authorization of a modification to the General Fund, Clerk of Courts' budget, as follows: from Supplies to Telephone Service in the amount of $580.
• The authorization of additional appropriation to the Family & Children First Adm GT budget as follows: from Unappropriated Funds to FAST, in the amount of $6,000.
• The authorization of a modification to the General Fund, Veterans Service Commission, as follows: from Relief Allowances to Salary Employees,
in the amount of $16,510; to PERS, in the amount of $2,800; to Workers Compensation, in the amount of $400; and to Medicare, in the amount of $290. The total amount from Relief Allowances is $20,000.
