Child receives severe injuries after explosion

On Friday January 29, 2010 at 10:59 am, the Highland County Sheriff's Office received a call of an injured child at a residence located at 12867 South St. in the Community of Rainsboro in Paint Township. The Paint Creek Joint EMS/ Fire District, the Hillsboro Fire and Rescue along with deputies and detectives from the Highland County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, it was discovered that a 9 year old male was suffering from severe trauma, burn and impact injuries as a result of an explosion that occurred inside the residence.
The victim was transported to the helipad at Highland District Hospital by Hillsboro Fire and Rescue personnel where they were met by Careflight. The victim was flown to Dayton Childrens Hospital with serious injuries.
The victim is identified as Aron Albrecht age 9 of Greenfield. Preliminary investigation into the explosion revealed that the victim was handling a homemade explosive device inside the kitchen of the residence belonging to a family member and activated it by lighting the fuse of the device causing it to detonate. The residence suffered heavy concussion damage as a result of the explosion.
The Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office is assisting HCSO Detectives and local fire investigators to determine the origin of the device and other information surrounding the explosion.
At the time of this release, investigators were interviewing family and witnesses, along with processing the scene of the explosion. Once the investigation is complete, it will be forwarded to the Highland County Prosecutors Office for review.[[In-content Ad]]
