Adena Women's Heart Smart Screenings Set for February 12

By
-
In observance of February as Heart Month and to assist women in the community with knowing their heart risks and learning ways to have a healthier heart, Adena Medical Center will host a Women’s Heart Smart Screening on Friday, February 12, at the Adena Sleep Center, located in the Adena Health Pavilion on the campus of Adena Medical Center in Chillicothe.  Screenings are available at a charge of $99 to women ages 40 - 60; however, space is limited and appointments are required and taken on a first-call basis.
Sponsored by Adena Cardiopulmonary Services, the comprehensive screening includes a lipid panel that measures total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL (good cholesterol) and blood glucose; carotid ultrasound; ankle and brachial blood pressure; body mass index (BMI) assessment; bioelectrical body impedance analysis (BIA); nutritional advice from a registered dietitian; and a review of cardiac risk factors by a cardiac nurse.  All of these important screenings will be provided at a charge of $99 for those who call to schedule an appointment.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for women to take charge of their cardiac health,” says Marla Weber, Director of Cardiovascular Services at Adena Medical Center.  “Most insurance won’t pay for cardiac health screenings if you are symptom free, so this is a way for women to be proactive and know their cardiac numbers so that if there is a problem, they can address and make lifestyle changes to correct.”
Ways that heart risk may be reduced include eating a variety of nutritious foods from all the food groups, such as more vegetables and fruits that can help control blood pressure levels; whole-grain foods that contain fiber which can help lower cholesterol; and eating fish at least twice a week.
It is also important to know the most common warning signals of heart attack.  The American Heart Association reports the following as symptoms to watch for: uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the center of the chest lasting more than a few minutes; pain spreading to the shoulders, neck or arms; and chest discomfort with lightheadedness, fainting, sweating, nausea or shortness of breath.  Less common warning signs of a heart attack include atypical chest pain, stomach or abdominal pain; nausea or dizziness; shortness of breath and difficulty breathing; unexplained anxiety, weakness or fatigue; and palpitations, cold sweats or paleness.
For more information or to schedule an appointment for the Women’s Heart Smart Screening at Adena Medical Center on Friday, February 12, please call (740) 779.7663 by 4:30 pm on Wednesday, February 3.  Appointments will be taken until February 3, or when the schedule is full.
