The Office of Healthy Ohio (OHO) will soon recognize 22 Ohio businesses for healthy worksite practices, including Adena Health System, one of only five employee worksites across the state to earn a Gold Award. In addition to the award from the state, Adena also recently received “gold” recognition by the American Heart Association as a “Fit Friendly Company.”
Ohio Department of Health (ODH) Director Alvin D. Jackson, MD, and Healthy Ohio Business Council Chair Cynthia Crosthwaite, will present the sixth-annual Healthy Ohio-Healthy Worksite awards on February 17 at the Embassy Suites in Dublin. The ceremony will be held during Health Action Council Ohio’s Columbus Kick-Off conference that features national experts on health reform, health care systems and health benefits.
More than 78 companies, cities and townships applied for the 2009 awards which recognize Ohio employers that demonstrate a commitment to employee health through comprehensive worksite health promotion and wellness programs.
“Workers spend a significant time at their jobs,” Jackson said. “Healthy practices at work almost certainly will translate to healthy practices at home and a valuable reduction in health care costs. These Ohio employers are leading the way in providing exemplary workplace wellness programs for their employees.”
According to Mary Charney, RN, BSN, Director of Occupational Health at Adena Health System, promoting employee wellness is something that is very
important to Adena, especially in its role as a healthcare provider for the community.
“Employees are our biggest asset,” Charney says. “Through our designated wellness programs, we hope to give employees the encouragement to serve as advocates of good health. Promoting healthy lifestyles and building on wellness and prevention is the key to achieving and sustaining healthy worksites.”
Charney adds that in 2009, the Health System initiated a “Wellness Wednesday” program designed specifically for employees to promote health and wellness through proper diet, nutrition, fitness and weight management. In addition, health risk assessments were offered to employees during wellness events through the year to assist with individual health and wellness improvement. Charney shares that employees have reported much success with the feedback and utilized the information to make positive and healthy changes in their lives.
Year round, Adena’s Occupational Health Department provides employees with
an opportunity to take advantage of wellness and prevention services such as
ergonomic worksite assessments, fitness programs, wellness coaching, stress
management, and job modification and safety programs. Charney says the
focus for 2010 hasn’t changed – “We plan on continuing with programs that
focus on prevention for our employees so that we can give them the tools for
a health life.”[[In-content Ad]]
