Mustangs’ 1st-half goal sends LC to win over North Adams

DODSONVILLE — Not getting underway until after 7:30 p.m., the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs played under the lights — and some rain —  in their Southern Hills Athletic Conference game with the North Adams Green Devils Monday night.

The game hosted by the Mustangs saw them score a goal with around 27 minutes left in the first half, and for the entire 80 minutes their defense stood strong, as the host Mustangs won by a 1-0 score to earn the SHAC win.

LC’s lone goal was by Josiah Burns, who was assisted by Kellin Storer. Burns earned the goal off a kick that bounced off his chest as he was leaping in the air and in the direction of the North Adams keeper, sending the ball into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

The goal gives Burns two goals for the season, as he also has collected three assists in nine games thus far.

That lead stood for the remainder of the first half, and through the second half, as the Mustangs kept the Green Devils away from the goal with tough defensive play and by controlling the tempo of the SHAC game.

LC’s victory on Monday was their fourth of the season, putting them at 4-3-2 overall with a 3-0-0 mark in the SHAC.

This was the Mustangs’ fourth home game of the ’23, season as they also lead the SHAC standings, and the loss by NAHS was their first conference loss of the ’23 season. NAHS now stands at 6-1-0 in the SHAC and 9-2-0 overall.

As for the season, Noah Bitzer leads LC with three goals.

Next for LCHS is a home non-conference game on Thursday, Sept. 28 against the Unioto Shermans with a 6:30 p.m. start. UHS this season is 8-4-0 overall, as their goals leader is Lucas Hanes with 18, followed by Kamden Smith with 11.
