Music at St. Mary's sponsors 2nd annual Christmas organ crawl for charity

Highland Humane Society is the beneficiary of the 2nd annual Christmas organ crawl which will be held on Nov. 30.

Three churches in Hillsboro which have pipe organs used in worship are involved. There is no admission charge for the event, but donations will be collected to benefit Highland Humane Society with their work with dogs and cats. 

While many houses of worship no longer use the organ to support worship, the organ continues to gain popularity across the United States with new organs being built and installed, keeping organ builders very busy. 

The organ crawl will begin at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church (corner of E. Main and S. East Streets), where Ruth White will present 20 minutes of music celebrating the Advent and Christmas seasons. 

The next church to be visited will be Hillsboro Global Methodist Church, where Mindy Lee will present her part of the event. 

Finally, the group moves to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church at N. High and E. North Streets where John M. Glaze will present his portion of the program. 

If all runs as planned and on time, the program ends at approximately 4:30 p.m. and the Episcopal Church will have refreshments prepared for the attendees in their Parish House. No transportation between churches is being provided. Attendees may walk or drive. 

An interesting aspect of this program is that all the organs are unique and of different building methods. 

Information on each instrument and its history will be in the program so that attendees will better understand the unique aspects of each. 

Again, the freewill donations collected will benefit Highland Humane Society, so please come prepared!
