Indians gain first win of season; go 1-1 at Deb’s Wooden Bat Classic

Hillsboro varsity baseball earned their first win of the 2023 season by defeating Rock Hill in their second game of the Deb’s Wooden Bat Classic — hosted by Whiteoak — as Hillsboro’s two games in the Saturday tournament were held at Shaffer Park.

HHS won their game against Rock Hill 13-8 to finish in third place in the four-team tournament. The Indians lost to Trimble in their first game by an 8-3 score.

In the win, the Indians led 4-0 at the end of the first inning, followed by HHS adding two runs in the second, while Rock Hill scored a run in the same inning for a 6-1 lead.

Rock Hill scored three runs in the top of the third, but the Indians responded with a four-run third, taking a 10-3 lead. HHS added a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Rock Hill responded with two run in the fifth inning. RHHS scored three more runs in the game, and the Indians added two final runs for their 13-8 win.

Hillsboro totaled nine hits and committed four errors. Rock Hill also had nine hits and committed eight errors.

Thompson was the winning pitcher, and for the 27 batters he faced, he threw 101 pitches, 63 for strikes. Thompson pitched five innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks, as he finished with eight strikeouts.

Korbin Adams pitched 0.2 innings, allowing three runs (none earned) on two hits and two walks. Adams threw 25 pitches, 11 for strikes. Brayden Hunter threw 1.1 innings, allowing no runs on no hits and one walk.

At the plate, Nic Burns was 1-for-3 with two runs, one RBI, one walk and a triple. He was hit by a pitch, and he stole a base.

Adams was 1-for-5 with three runs, one RBI and a steal. Bryce Parsons went 1-for-4 with three runs, one RBI, one walk and two steals. Hunter finished 2-for-5 with two runs, three RBI and a steal.

Ovid Wilson scored a run, drew a walk and was hit by a pitch. Teammate Jackson Cornele went 2-for-3 with two RBI and was hit by a pitch. Travis Ross finished 1-for-3 and collected two RBI and one walk. Peyton Aber had an RBI and walked once. Brogan Priest finished 1-for-3 with two runs and a walk.

In their first game, the Indians lost 8-3 to visiting Trimble.

Hillsboro’s runs consisted of one run in the second, one run in the third and a run in the sixth inning. Trimble scored two runs in the first, three runs in the third, two runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth inning.

For Hillsboro, Burns was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Parsons finished 1-for-4 with an RBI, and. Hunter went 1-for-3 with a run. Will Hart drew a walk, Carson Scott scored a run, and Thompson forced a walk.

Ben Miller pitched 2.2 innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on four hits and five walks. He totaled five strikeouts as he threw. 80 pitches, 42 for strikes, facing 17 batters.

Ross also pitched 3.1 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk. He totaled two strikeouts, throwing 54 pitches, 33 for strikes as he faced 16 batters.

The Indians are now 1-6 overall this season.
