Hillsboro softball opens ‘23 season with tri-doubleheader sweep

Two games into the 2023 season, the Hillsboro Lady Indians earned a tri-doubleheader sweep of both Portsmouth Notre Dame and Peebles, improving to 2-0 to start the season.

Against Notre Dame (the games were played at Rock Hill), the Hillsboro softball squad won by a 3-2 in eight innings. Hillsboro defeated Peebles, 12-2 in their second game.

The first game was won with a walk-off home run off the bat of Kinsey Gilliland in the bottom of the eighth inning, breaking a 2-2 tie for a 3-2 win over Notre Dame. 

Notre Dame led 1-0 after the first inning and 2-0 once the top of the third was completed. Hillsboro answered with a two-run bottom of the third, tying the score at 2-2 with runs from Halle Reveal and Morgan Garman.The RBI were credited to Reveal and Camryn Spruell. 

For the game, the Lady Indians totaled six hits and comtited six errors. NDHS totaled one hit and one error. 

For the Lady Indians, Reveal was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Spruell finished 2-for-3 with one RBI. Gilliland ended the game 1-for-3 one run, one RBI and one walk. 

Isabelle Brunck finished 1-for-3 (a double), and Garman scored one run, forced a walk and stole a base. 

In the circle, Spruell was the winning pitcher as she pitched a complete game (eight innings), allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit and four walks. Spruell finished the game with 10 strikeouts as she faced 33 batters, throwing 121 pitches (76 for strikes).

In the second game of their doubleheader on Saturday, Hillsboro defeated Peebles, 12-2. 

Peebles led 1-0 after the top of the first inning, but Hillsboro answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Both teams scored a run in the third inning, but then Hillsboro took control of the game with a seven-run bottom of the fourth and completed the run-rule win with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Hillsboro finished with 12 runs, eight hits and two errors. Peebles finished with two hits and four errors. 

Addie Huff finished 1-for-2 with one run and one walk. Reagan Clemons scored one run, while Reveal finished 1-for-3 (a double) with two runs, two RBI and one walk. 

Gilliland totaled two runs, two RBI and one walk. Spruell finished the game 1-for-1 (a home run), with two runs, two RBI and a walk. 

Also for Hillsboro, Eowyn Brown was 2-for-3 (two doubles) with one RBI. Brunck ended 1-for-2 (a double) with one run, two RBI and a walk. Chloe Page was 1-for-2 with one run, and Garman finished 1-for-2 with one run. 

In the circle, Hannah Burton pitched five innings, where she allowed two unearned runs on two hits and one walk. She faced 20 batters, where she struck out six batters. Burton threw 70 pitches (45 for strikes).
