Hillsboro Post 129 team falls in recent tournaments
The Hillsboro American Legion Post 129 baseball team played four games in Chillicothe this past weekend at the Jim Jadwin Memorial, then traveled to Springfield on Monday for a doubleheader, as they were 0-6 in the games played.
On Friday, June 23, Post 129 lost a game to the junior Post 757 team by an 11-1 score in five innings.
Hillsboro scored one run in the top of the fourth inning, which tied the game at 1-1, as Chillicothe’s junior team scored one run in the bottom of the third. In the bottom of the fourth, the game got away from Post 129, as the junior Post 757 team had a 10-run inning.
Chillicothe totaled 11 hits in the game, while Hillsboro had five hits.
For Post 129, Easton Daulton was 2-for-2 with a walk. Hunter Burns went 1-for-2, while Nick Reed scored a run and walked once. Landry Hattan was 1-for-2, and Ben Matthews finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and a steal.
In their second game on Friday, June 23, Post 129 lost to Adrian Post 275 by a 10-0 score.
Adrian Post 275 scored three runs in the bottom of the first, followed by one run in the second, four runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth for the run-rule win over Hillsboro.
Post 275 finished with 17 hits, and Hillsboro Post 129 had three hits, as Hillsboro also committed two errors.
Reed, Matthews and Brandon Ludwick each were 1-for-2 at the plate, with Matthews also having a steal. Haydon Hice drew a walk for Hillsboro Post 129.
In their first game on Saturday, Hillsboro Post 129 lost to the Chillicothe Post 757 Colts, 20-4. Post 757 finished with 15 hits, and Hillsboro Post 129 had four hits.
Post 757 scored seven runs in the top of the third, then added another seven runs in the top of the fourth inning. Post 757 then scored six final runs in the fifth inning. Hillsboro’s runs came with three in the bottom of the third and one run in the fifth inning.
Chillicothe totaled four errors, and Hillsboro had three.
For Hillsboro, Reed scored a run and walked once, while Caleb Rothwell was 1-for-3 with a walk. Daulton collected an RBI and a walk.
Burns finished with a run and two steals, while Brady Lung walked once. Hice ended the game 1-for-2 with one RBI and a walk.
Matthews was 1-for-3, Ludwick scored a run and was hit by a pitch and Hattan was also hit by a pitch.
In their second game on Saturday, Hillsboro Post 129 once again faced Chillicothe Post 757, losing 10-4.
Post 757 scored three runs in the bottom of the first, two runs in the fourth, three runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth inning. Hillsboro scored one run in the sixth and three runs in the seventh inning.
In all, Hillsboro Post 129 totaled six hits and had six errors, while Post 757 finished with 10 hits.
The loss saw Hillsboro’s Reed draw a walk, and Rothwell finished 1-for-2 with two runs and two walks. Daulton went 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Burns ended the game 1-for-4 with one RBI, and teammate Lung was 1-for-4 with one RBI. Hice went 1-for-2 with a walk, Hattan was 1-for-2 with a run and walk and Tyler Tomera-Hiller finished the game with a run.
On Monday, Post 129 started the week with a doubleheader in Springfield, losing the games by scores of 5-4 and 14-2.
In the first game Monday, Hillsboro led 2-0 after a two-run second inning but lost the lead when Springfield scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Springfield added one run in the fifth and then again in the seventh to walk off for the win, offsetting the two-run sixth inning by Post 129.
Rothwell was 2–for-4 with a run, RBI and steal. Burns went 3-for-4 with a steal, and Reed was 1-for-2 with an RBI, walk and he was hit by a pitch.
Matthews finished 1-for-3 with a run and walk, and Brayden Kisling ended the game at 1-for-3 with a run and walk, with his hit being a double. Tomera-Hiller was also 1-for-3 with an RBI.
In the second game of the twinbill, Post 129 lost to Springfield, 14-2.
Springfield scored one run in the bottom of the second tying the score at 1-1 as Post 129 scored a run in the top of the first. Post 129 took the lead at 2-1 with a run in the top of the third. Springfield took over the lead with a five-run bottom of the third, following that with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth.
In all, Hillsboro totaled three hits and committed four errors, while Springfield had seven hits and one error.
Rothwell was 2-for-3 with a run and two steals. Matthews went 1-for-1 with a walk and steal.
Reed was hit by a pitch, and Burns had two RBI and a walk. Hunter Barnhill finished with a walk, and Tomera-Hiller scored a run and walked once.
The six losses send Hillsboro Post 129 to an overall record of 4-14.
