Hillsboro mayor proclaims Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week

Hillsboro Mayor Justin Harsha proclaimed the week of Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week in the City of Hillsboro.
Accepting the proclamation Monday morning were representatives of the Hillsboro Daughters of the American Revolution Waw-wil-a-way Chapter: Regent Elissa Zornes and Constitution Committee member Jane Stowers.
Sept. 17 marks the 236th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America by the Constitutional Convention.
According to DAR.org, “Constitution Week is celebrated annually during the week of Sept. 17-23 to commemorate its history, importance and bring attention to how it serves still today. This celebration of the Constitution was started by the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1955, DAR petitioned Congress to set aside Sept. 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into public law on Aug. 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
“The aims of the Constitution Week celebration are to: emphasize citizens' responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution; inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America's great heritage and the foundation for our way of life; and encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.”
The community is encouraged to join in ringing bells Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. for “Bells Across America,” to commemorate the anniversary of the Constitution’s signing.
