A wintry mix of rain, freezing rain and sleet has arrived in south-central Ohio, and there's still more to come.
All available crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation - District 9 are working to plow and treat roadways with de-icing materials; however, routes are slick and becoming icy, especially in the northern portions of the district where temperatures are slightly colder and have fallen below freezing.
As of 6 a.m. today, much of the eight-county region was receiving freezing rain and sleet, with most of Lawrence County receiving rain. Crews have also reported varying pavement conditions, from icy or ice-covered to slushy and wet, and they are also reporting "black ice" forming on those routes which appear wet.
In addition to the precipitation, trees and branches are falling from the weight of ice forming on the limbs, and there is the threat of power lines falling as well. Crews are working to clear trees as needed.
Motorists are urged to avoid unnecessary travel; however, those who must be driving this morning are reminded to use extreme caution. Drivers need to reduce their speed, maintain a safe following distance behind other vehicles and allow additional travel time.
