Waverly man arrested after allegedly using counterfeit currency in Paint Township

On Monday, June 29 at approximately 10:26 p.m., Highland County Sheriff's deputies responded to the 7700 block of state Route 753 in Paint Township for a report of a theft.

The homeowner reported that a male subject had allegedly arranged to purchase a mini dirt bike and paid for it with what was later determined to be counterfeit money — specifically, motion-picture "prop money" marked for film use but appearing genuine at first glance. The suspect left the area on the dirt bike, traveling southbound and following a small, dark-colored vehicle that had dropped him off.

Deputies patrolled the area, and at approximately 11:03 p.m., located the dirt bike at a nearby business. During the contact, one of the subjects allegedly fled on foot and was taken into custody following a brief struggle.

The arrested subject was identified as Christopher Stephens, 30, of Waverly. Stephens was found to be wanted on an active warrant out of Pike County and an additional warrant through this agency.

During the arrest, deputies also allegedly located an additional quantity of counterfeit currency and items of drug paraphernalia.

Stephens faces charges that include possession of counterfeit currency, resisting arrest and possession of drug abuse instruments.

The Highland County Sheriff's Office reminds residents to be cautious during private sales and to verify currency before completing a transaction.
