Veterans honored at Hillsboro Christian Academy

Veterans of school families and friends were invited to attend the weekly chapel service at Hillsboro Christian Academy this past Thursday, Nov. 7.

The Honor Guard from the local branch of the VFW opened the service with the presentation of the colors. The 4th and 5th-graders lead the audience in "The Star-Spangled Banner" following the pledges.

Jacob Rhonemus (8th grade) presented a brief history of Veterans Day. Rachel Tracy (8th grade) recited "Flag of the Free," by Walter Taylor Field. Hope Wyckoff (7th grade) recited "Show the Flag," by Edgar Albert Guest.

Sergeant Judy McCray, with the help of three men from the Honor Guard, presented the "13 Folds of the Flag."

William Cassner (8th grade) collected several quotes from past presidents and other statesmen about the importance and necessity of valor and dedication to country. He concluded his presentation with the number of casualties for each war in which American soldiers had given their lives.

Hannah McIntyre (8th Grade) read the American's Creed followed by The Soldier, read by Alaina Johnson (7th Grade).

Mrs. Lynette Tracy, 2nd & 3rd grade teacher and a private in the 38th Military Police Company read The Soldier's Creed.

Mrs. Lori Cassner (Library/Media Specialist and 6th - 8th grade literature and science teacher) recited In Flander's Field, by Lt Colonel John McCrae.

The Kindergarten through 3rd grade students enlightened the audience with versions of "You're A Grand Old Flag" and "Coming Home to Glory."

The students concluded the program with a version of the Armed Forces Medley. Those in the audience who were in each particular branch of the armed forces stood and received applause for their sacrifice and heroism as their song was sung.

The Honor Guard exited with the colors and lead the procession outside where a moment of silence was offered for those soldiers who had given their lives followed by a 21-gun salute and Taps.

Mrs. Sears, the principal of Hillsboro Christian Academy would like to thank all who attended and members from the VFW and the AmVets who helped to make this service such a special one. They are hoping to make this an annual event and would like to encourage more of the community to make their calendars for the Thursday before Veterans Day next year.
