Peebles woman found guilty of theft in stolen dog case

A Peebles woman arrested after Adams County sheriff’s deputies recovered 17 dogs from her mobile home will be sentenced later this month after she was found guilty of theft.
Olivia Yost, 27, was arrested Jan. 21 when a woman reported that she believed Yost and another woman, Molly Salser, 26, were attempting to “lure her relative’s dog into their car,” according to a report by Fox 19. Officers found a dog that was reported missing, along with 16 other dogs, in a residence on Jones Road in Peebles. Both Yost and Salser were arrested on theft charges, and both women pleaded not guilty during their respective arraignments.

Adams County Court records say that “based upon the evidence and testimony presented, the court finds that the State of Ohio has met its burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt and finds [Yost] guilty of theft, a misdemeanor of the first degree.”
Yost’s case has been referred to the Adams County Probation Department for a pre-sentence investigation and report. Yost is due to be sentenced March 26 at 2 p.m.
According to Hillsboro Municipal Court records, Yost was previously charged with animal cruelty in Hillsboro. In November 2015, that case was filed, along with three separate charges of failing to control her dogs. Two other charges of failing to control dogs were filed in December 2015, followed by another similar charge filed in March 2016. As a result, Yost was to “own/possess no dogs,” the court documents and the Fox 19 article said.
Yost remains in the Adams County Jail as of March 9.
As previously reported in The Highland County Press, Salser’s theft charges were amended to a second-degree misdemeanor charge of obstruction of official business Jan. 29. She was sentenced Feb. 5 to 90 days in jail, with 76 days suspended and credit for 14 days served. She was placed under community control for two years and ordered not to have any contact with Yost. Salser was also ordered not to live at the mobile home where the dogs were recovered.
