As previously reported in The Highland County Press, Aug. 21, 2018 marked one year since Caldwell, then 14, was last seen in Sugarcreek Township, Ohio. Law enforcement believes that Jacob witnessed a crime on Aug. 25, 2017, and he was last seen captured on surveillance in a parking lot on Aug. 21, 2017. Jacob was wearing a dark shirt, blue shorts and black shoes.

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, along with the Sugarcreek Township Police Department, the Riverside Police Department and the Cincinnati Division of the FBI, issued a statement Aug. 24 asking for the public’s help to locate Caldwell.

Caldwell’s page on the kidnapping/missing person section of the FBI Cincinnati website has been marked as “recovered.”

According to a report by WHIO, the Sugarcreek Township Police Department received a tip “from a female who said she had information about where to find Jacob.” Upon execution of a search warrant at a home in Miami Township, Caldwell was found “in the basement.” Also inside the home were “four adults [who] are associates of the family of Jacob's mother, Tawnney Caldwell, who is in jail facing a potential capital murder charge in relation to Robert Caldwell's death.”
