Man facing charges after allegedly firing gunshots near Fayetteville schools

On May 16 at 11:42 a.m., Brown County Dispatch received a call of gunshots fired in the vicinity of Russell Street in Fayetteville. Russell Street is directly east of Fayetteville Middle School.
Additional reports were received by the Brown County Dispatch Center advising the male suspect with a pistol was observed in the vicinity of Russell Street. Sergeant Jamey Sininger of the Brown County Sheriff’s Office responded and located a male, whom a witness identified as the subject with the gun, behind a dwelling on Russell Street. Near where the suspect was found, a 9mm handgun and spent shell casings were recovered. The suspect was taken into custody at that time.

Due to the proximity of the firearms discharge incident, Fayetteville High School and Middle School enacted their lockdown procedures.
At approximately 12:09 p.m., Brown County deputies were advised by the Brown County Dispatch that a student in the Fayetteville Middle School had sent a text message advising that there was a shooter in the high school and that he was in hiding. Deputies made entry into the Fayetteville Middle School, met with school officials and confirmed that the text message was inaccurate. Once Fayetteville Middle School was confirmed clear of any armed threat, deputies cleared the scene.
The suspect in this incident has been identified as Kenneth P. Rummel, Jr., 38, of Fayetteville. Pending charges against Rummel include aggravated burglary, theft of a firearm, discharge of a firearm in a school safety zone and possession of a firearm under disability. All charges referenced are felonies.
There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident.
Participating agencies included the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Brown County Drug Task Force, Fayetteville Police Department, Mount Orab Police Department and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
