Dr. Mark Hurst was sworn in Tuesday as director of the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services by Governor John R. Kasich.

Hurst has served as medical director of the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services since 2012. As medical director, he provided clinical leadership for the department, including supervision of Ohio's six regional psychiatric hospitals and all drug and alcohol recovery services in the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. He joined the Ohio Department of Mental Health in 1993.
A native of Zanesville, Hurst was the 1981 class valedictorian at Muskingum College in New Concord. He graduated with honors from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo in 1985 and completed residency training at the University of Michigan and at The Ohio State University.
