Division of Liquor Control announces online resource highlighting permit renewal process
With nearly one-third of Ohio’s approximately 27,000 liquor permits set to expire on June 1, the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Liquor Control has developed an online resource to help inform Ohioans about the permit renewal process and the role that local legislative bodies play.
The online Liquor Permit Renewal & Objection Overview answers a number of commonly asked questions, such as:
• When are permits renewed?
• What happens if a permit holder doesn’t renew their permit in a timely manner?
• What is the Liquor Control Commission?
• What is the objection process and how does it impact permit renewals?
• Are other state agencies involved with the renewal and objection process?
Approximately 8,881 Retail (Class C and D) liquor permits (i.e. bars and restaurants) located in the following 34 counties will expire June 1, 2024: Adams, Allen, Auglaize, Brown, Butler, Champaign, Clark, Clermont, Clinton, Defiance, Drake, Fayette, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Hancock, Hardin, Henry, Highland, Logan, Lucas, Mercer, Miami, Montgomery, Ottawa, Paulding, Preble, Putnam, Sandusky, Shelby, Van Wert, Warren, Williams and Wood.
Local legislative authorities have the right to object to the renewal of a liquor permit in their jurisdiction. They must postmark their objections by May 2, 2024.
“The Division of Liquor Control is committed to being a good partner to permit holders, the general public and the communities in which they live and operate,” said Paul Kulwinski, DOLC director of licensing and interim superintendent. “This new online resource was developed to provide all Ohioans with the information they need should they wish to participate in the permit-renewal process in their communities.”
