GREENFIELD - A Greenfield firefighter continues to wait for compensation from the city, following a recent decision by the Civil Service Commission to reinstate the firefighter.
As first reported by The Highland County Press, a March ruling on the layoff of Jamie Thompson was reversed last month by the Civil Service Commission. Thompson was informed that his reinstatement was from Feb. 2-Aug. 28, 2009.
According to Thompson, on Nov. 13, he was told by Greenfield Auditor Karen Daniels that a check has been issued for his back pay from Feb. 2-Aug. 28. However, he said he still has not received compensation due to a decision by acting city manager Harvey Everhart.
Daniels confirmed Tuesday that the check had not been given to Thompson and referred questions to Greenfield law director Brian Zets.
Zets, a Columbus area attorney, told The Highland County Press Tuesday that he has been in contact with Thompson's attorney and that the city is waiting for all appeals to be concluded before releasing the check. Zets also said the city is making up any difference in additional medical insurance expenses Thompson incurred during the period.
In a letter from Everhart dated Nov. 13, Thompson was informed: "As you know, the city of Greenfield is experiencing a financial emergency and as a result a number of employees are being laid off for an indeterminate period of time. Please be advised that your employment with the city of Greenfield is being placed in a layoff status effective 8 a.m. Aug. 28, 2009. ... The reason for the layoff is the continued decrease in income receipts as well as funding from Highland County and (the) state of Ohio. As you may know, the income tax dollars supplies (sic) the vast majority of funds to the city for employees and operations paid via the general fund."
Zets said he expects Thompson's check to be disbursed soon, with payment to coincide with the conclusion of any and all legal appeals.[[In-content Ad]]
