Cincinnati United Attack soccer team places second in World Soccer Championship
Team includes grandson of Phil and Carol Roberts of Hillsboro
The Cincinnati United Attack 3-on-3 soccer team capitalized on its great team speed and aggressive defense to finish second in the Kick It 3v3 World Soccer Championship held Jan. 16-18 in Orlando, Fla., at Disney's Wide World of Sports.
The team includes 11-year-old Brady Roberts, the son of Mark and Nancy Roberts of West Chester (formerly of Hillsboro). Brady is the grandson of Phil and Carol Roberts of Hillsboro.
In addition to Brady, other team members are: Matt Scheper, Donny Stock, Josh Oates, J.J. Wolf and Ross Tripp. The coaches are Brian Oates and Mark Roberts.
Cincinnati United Attack has posted more than 90 victories and claimed four tournament champions. In the recent World Soccer Championship, they defeated five top 10-ranked teams before finishing as the tournament runner-up. All this, after being the eighth seed in the tournament field.
"Three-on-three soccer is very exciting and very fast-paced," said Phil Roberts, who has watched many of his grandson's matches. "I compare the 3-on-3 soccer game to hockey; it's just that fast. The kids have to be in great shape to play it."
All the players on the team are part of the Cincinnati United soccer club.
"Probably the biggest thing I am proud of from this particular year is how well we did to make it to the final eight," head coach Brian Oates told The Cincinnati Enquirer's Leah Zipperstein. "To get all the way through, we knew we had to play the two teams that had beaten us in the regional competition in Clarksville, Tenn.
"We played as well together as a team this year as we ever have in any previous tournament," Oates said.
