Chillicothe man sentenced to 4 years in Highland County felonious assault case
A Chillicothe man was sentenced last week to four years in prison after pleading guilty to a felonious assault charge in Highland County Common Pleas Court.
As previously reported, Cameron D. Renner, 19, was indicted by a Highland County grand jury in October 2023 on one count of complicity to aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony; one count of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony; felonious assault, a second-degree felony; one count of having weapons while under disability, a third-degree felony; and two gun specifications.
Renner pleaded guilty to the felonious assault charge Jan. 18, with the remaining charges dismissed. The indictment alleged that Renner “did knowingly cause or attempt to cause serious physical harm” to a victim by means of a .40-caliber handgun on or about Aug. 16-17, 2023.
During the sentencing hearing Feb. 14, Renner’s attorney, Scott Wood, told Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss that Renner “has no prior felony record” and has “had good performance while on bond, has been reporting as required, has been testing clean and has maintained employment.
“As I look at this situation, my client certainly made some very poor decisions, but since then he now has a family, and I think he’s dedicated to working hard while incarcerated and getting back to his family as quickly as possible,” Wood said.
Renner also said he would “like to apologize for my actions” and told the judge, “I’m going to stay on a smooth path once I get out and work hard to take care of my family.”
Coss said he would agree to the plea agreement, which recommended a four-year sentence. Under the Reagan Tokes Law, the sentence could be up to six years in prison. Renner had 15 days of jail time credit.
