Adena’s quality success saves taxpayers $9.4 million

Adena Health System’s accountable care organization (ACO), the Adena Healthcare Collaborative LLC, has received its Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) results for Performance Year 2016. Earning a near-perfect score for overall quality of 96.49 percent, Adena’s ACO has saved U.S. taxpayers more than $9.4 million over the course of 2016.
As stated in its MSSP agreement with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Adena’s ACO quality efforts will enable the Health System to share in the total savings, earning back more than $4.4 million. Adena’s ACO provides quality care and oversight of a Medicare-covered patient population that includes 9,012 people in our region.

“This is great news for Adena, but more importantly for our patients who are seeing the highest-quality levels of care by our providers and targeted follow-up through the System’s Population Health efforts,” Adena President and CEO Jeff Graham said. “In just its second year, Adena’s ACO has outscored the majority of the nation’s participating ACOs and saved the Medicare system more than $14.6 million since January 2015.
“Commitment and teamwork by our Population Health team and Adena providers are truly making a difference in the lives of our patients and keeping them healthier longer.”
Quality performance benchmarks are established by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), prior to the reporting period for which they apply. Benchmarks are set for two years (2016-2017 reporting periods). For the 2016 reporting year, CMS measured quality of care using 33 quality measures (32 individual measures and one composite measure that includes two individual component measures). Of those measures, Adena scored its near-perfect score.
“The ACO is somewhat invisible to the patient, but they benefit in many ways due to the team of providers and Population Health staff, with some patients receiving ‘touches’ two times or more each day,” said H. Takaji Kittaka, Jr., MD, Medical Director for the Adena Healthcare Collaborative, LLC. “The high quality of care being delivered at all levels is resulting in patients being able to maintain their quality of life, to better manage chronic illnesses and to avoid the need for frequent hospitalization.”
Adena is one of 12 ACOs in Ohio participating in the MSSP, and one of just three located south of Akron. Medicare ACOs include groups of doctors, hospitals and other health care providers who voluntarily come together to provide coordinated, high-quality care to a specific population of Medicare patients. The goal of coordinated care is to ensure patients, especially the chronically ill, get the right care at the right time, while avoiding unnecessary duplication of services and preventing medical errors. When an ACO exceeds quality and financial thresholds – demonstrating achievement of high-quality care and wiser spending of health care dollars – it is able to share in the savings generated for Medicare.
