Adena strengthens robotic surgery program with new robots

Adena Health System is pleased to announce the expansion of their surgical robotic program at Adena Regional Medical Center.
Recently, Adena completed the purchase of the new da Vinci X and da Vinci Xi Surgical Systems and have installed them into its operating rooms. Since Adena’s Robotic Surgery Program began in Oct. 2012 with a single da Vinci Si, it has transformed from an upstart to becoming nationally recognized as an “Epicenter of Excellence,” only one of five hospitals to receive this distinction in Ohio.

“It has always been Adena Health System’s focus to offer the latest surgical advances to patients in our region, keeping them and their families close to home for the best care,” said Adena President and CEO Jeff Graham. “Our current robotic program has been a huge success, and our patients are experiencing highly successful outcomes with robotic-assisted surgeries.
“This expansion will provide our surgeons with the newest technology being able to meet our communities’ needs, so we felt it was the right time to upgrade our current robotic surgical system and add a second robot allowing greater access for patients to benefit from our minimally invasive surgery services.”
Today, Adena is capable of performing 25 types of robot-assisted surgeries compared to only seven just five years ago. Already, Adena’s Robotic Surgery Program, which is supported by 10 surgeons, has reached the 2,000-surgery milestone.
“The da Vinci Xi System is the latest generation of robots that allows for more complex procedures, such as anti-reflux surgery, small bowel and colon surgery and hernia to be performed in a minimally invasive fashion,” Adena General Surgeon Dr. Bill Sever said. “Ninety-plus percent of my operations are now performed robotically, which has drastically decreased the need for a hospital stay.”
The da Vinci Surgical Systems enable a surgeon to perform extremely precise procedures, using small incisions, in areas of the body that are difficult for the human hand to reach. Although robotic instruments can rotate 360 degrees, providing greater mobility than a surgeon's own hands, the surgeon is in complete control of the instruments while dissecting and suturing.
The da Vinci X and Xi Systems were designed with the goal of further advancing the technology used in minimally invasive surgery. Versatile anatomical access, improved visual definition using an advanced endoscope and thinner, longer arms to extend operative reach are features of the new systems that can be used for a wide spectrum of minimally invasive procedures including hepatobiliary, colorectal, thoracic, gynecology, urology and general surgery.
