Harold Paul Brewer

Harold Paul Brewer, 86, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully Monday, June 19, 2023 at home, with his family by his side.

He was born Jan. 6, 1937 in Hardburly, Ky., the son of the late John Green Brewer and Alma (Chester) Brewer.

Paul proudly served in the United States Air Force for 12 years during the Vietnam War era and worked as a civilian for Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for many years. He later owned and operated the New Vienna Restaurant with his late wife, Mary, until they retired.

Paul was very hard-working and loved being active outdoors. His outdoor passions included gardening, fishing, hunting and taking care of his wooded property, which included countless hours of mowing and tree cutting.

Paul and Mary loved entertaining family and friends with many backyard barbecues and bluegrass jams. He truly enjoyed, and competed strongly in, card games and both horseshoe and cornhole pitching. Paul was an avid UK basketball fan, and throughout his life he taught many valuable life lessons to his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

Paul is survived by six children, Gil Brewer, Shay (Herman) Doak, Kim Burney, Donald (Lisa) Brewer, Karen (Rex) Carey and Lori (Mike) Blackburn; 14 grandchildren, Veronica (John) Lawson, Maria (Stephen) Edmondson, Joseph Doak, Erika (Daniel) Huber, Landon Doak, Michael Burney, Christopher Blackburn, Cassandra Soale, Ryan Souther, Jessica (Justin) Hupp, Heather (Jeremy) Culp, Rex (Brandie) Carey, Kyle Carey and Sierra Carey; 10 great-grandchildren; three brothers; four sisters; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances (McIntosh) Brewer, on Jan. 11, 2018; daughter, Carol Souther; a grandson, Matthew Paul Burney; and nine brothers.

Visitation will be held Friday, June 23, 2023 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Davis-Turner Funeral Home in Lynchburg. Funeral service will take place following visitation Friday, June 23 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow services in the New Vienna IOOF Cemetery.
