Gary Lee Rome, 62, of Wilmington, passed away June 22, 2023.

He was born Oct. 30, 1960 in Newark to the late Harry John and Shirley Ann (Hartrum) Rome.

A 1979 Newark High School graduate, Gary had a successful career as an owner/operator for the local Wendy's Restaurants and was a valued member of the community. He was a driving force behind the Thanksgiving Day Community Feast for many years, bringing joy to countless families during the holiday season. He loved golfing, especially at the Snow Hill Country Club, and playing cards.

Gary was dearly loved by those who knew him. He touched many hearts during his life with them and will forever remain in their memories.

Gary will be deeply missed by his partner in life, Cheri Hayes of Wilmington, and her children, Joshua, Nathan and Maddie; his daughters, Brandie Rome of Denver, Colo. and Miranda Hayes of Wilmington; his son, James Kelley of Orlando, Fla.; his grandchildren, Stella, Bria, Brantley and Aodhan; and his brothers, John (Cheryl) Rome of Sedona, Ariz. and Ed (Jamie) Rome of Jacksonville, Fla.

In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his dear sister Cathy Sue Baker in 2022.

Friends may pay their respects Tuesday, June 27, 2023 from 4-7 p.m. at Fisher-Edgington Funeral Home, 97 West Locust Street at North Mulberry Street, Wilmington. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Fisher-Edgington Funeral Home with Pastor Connor Thompson officiating and Gary’s brother, John, providing an eulogy. Gary will be laid to rest at Sugar Grove Cemetery in Wilmington immediately following the service.
