During the week of the Highland County Fair, which took place from Sept. 1-7, members of the Hillsboro Great Oaks FFA Chapter had the opportunity to participate in many exciting activities and events. One of these events that Hillsboro Great Oaks FFA members participated in was the Highland County Calf Scramble.

During this event, the participants had the chance to compete by gearing up in protective gear and trying to catch one of many beef calves running around the ring and get them to a small area within the ring. The goal of the competitors is to be the first to accomplish this task in order to receive a banner for each respective age division.

The two Hillsboro Great Oaks FFA members both competed in the 15-year-old age division, which had a total of six contestants. These two members were sophomore and second-year member Kenny Shawhan and sophomore and second-year member Chanel Captain.

Captain enjoyed the competition, seeing how she was stepping out of her comfort zone and competed in this contest. She did great and was very competitive within the event. Shawhan also was very happy with his performance within this same event. He performed so well that he was the first person to get the calf in the middle in order to win the competition and receive the champion 15-year-old division banner.

The calf scramble is a newer competition within the Highland County Junior Fair. The event was created last year, making this the second-ever time this event has been held. The opportunity for junior fair members to participate and involve themselves within the Highland County Fair is always growing.

The Hillsboro Great Oaks FFA Chapter is very proud of both of these FFA members that competed in this specific contest as well as every other event that the various FFA members participated in during the week of the fair.
