Donald Lee Howard
Donald Lee Howard, 72, of Lynchburg, passed away July 9, 2023, at his home.
He was born June 2, 1951, in Melvin, the son of the late Albert Howard and Lucy (Hubbell) Steritz.
Donald graduated from Lynchburg-Clay High School in 1971. Donald enlisted in the Air Force upon graduation and served in both the Vietnam Conflict and the First Gulf War. Donald proudly served his country as a Crew Chief on both F-4 and F-16 aircraft.
Donald retired after 20 years and returned home to the Steritz Family farm, where he farmed with his stepfather, John Steritz, for 30 years. He was a lifelong mechanic who enjoyed working on anything with a motor and enjoyed flying his remote-controlled airplanes. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Donald is survived by his daughter, Ahira (John) Hertlein; two granddaughters, Aubrey Hertlein and Alyvia Hertlein; two sisters, Karen Malott and Deborah Howard; a brother, Larry (Jenny) Howard; three nephews, Tony Howard, Travis Howard and John Blagg; a niece, Megan Priore; and many friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, John Steritz; a sister, Margaret Davidson; a niece, Dawn Michelle Crockett, and a nephew, Aaron Blagg.
Gathering of family and friends will be held Thursday, July 20, 2023 from 1-3 p.m. at the Davis-Turner Funeral Home in Lynchburg. Celebration of Donald’s life will take place Thursday, July 20 at 3 p.m. at the Davis-Turner Funeral Home. Military honors, presented by the Highland County Veterans Honor Guard, will follow services at the funeral home.
