David John Cokonougher
David John Cokonougher, 72, of Greenfield, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at St. Catherine’s Manor in Washington Court House.
He was born Aug. 1, 1950 in Greenfield, the son of Forest Milton Cokonougher and Mary Jo (Fout) Everhart.
He was a 1968 graduate of Edward Lee McClain High School and had several factory jobs in his past but was well known as “Dave and Son Carpet.” He became a DJ and an ordained minister within the last 15 years and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Greenfield.
He loved sports; most people remember him as a softball umpire at Felson Park. He loved to bowl, with four perfect games of 300 and four 299 games, and was in the Bowling Hall of Fame. Golf then became his sport of choice, playing in local and traveling leagues. His latest passion was playing Texas Hold’em. He wasn’t a pro but loved being with people.
He was a Golden Eagle (30-plus year) member at F.O.E. #1325 and a former trustee, a lifetime member of the VFW Post 4736 of Greenfield and once a member of the B.P.O.E. Elks #129 of Washington C.H.
David never met a stranger and always enjoyed volunteering to help others in the community. He was known for his quick wit, infectious smile, kind, compassionate spirit and pleasant personality that was contagious to everyone he met. He will be dearly missed by all. He was an 11-year survivor from a liver transplant from 2012.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Leigh (Newman) Cokonougher, whom he met in 2001 and then married Jan. 21, 2003; the two were inseparable. David had three sons, David John Cokonougher II of Greenfield, Darren Anthony Cokonougher or Cincinnati and Adam John (Katherine) Cokonougher of Vidalia, Ga.; three granddaughters, Alexis, Mackenzie and Leah Cokonougher of Cincinnati; his siblings, Nancy (Phil) Harewood of Greenfield, Edward (Lee Ann) Everhart of Greenfield, Pam (Bill) Carson of Greenfield and Brenda (Gary) Conaway of Minnesota; brothers-in-law, Mike Newman of Dayton, Steve (Debby) Newman of Chillicothe, John Newman of Kansas City, Mo.; sister in-law, Sharon (Russell) Baxla of Greenfield; special niece, Dawn (Rob) Snavely; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins; his precious dog, Piper; and very close friends, Jennifer, Buddy and Sadie Kennedy, Katherine Hammond and Janet Branson.
He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Zoey Cokonougher; grandfather and grandmother, Anthony and Bertha Fout; stepfather, Stanley Norman Everhart; in-laws, Roy and Helen Newman; his faithful companion of 18 years, Granger; and both parents.
Cremation will take place, and a celebration of life will begin Saturday, July 1 at 11 a.m. at F.O.E. #1325, 1275 N. Washington Street, Greenfield, Ohio 45123 beginning with an Eagles service and then Pastor Danny Dodds will officiate. Food and fellowship will follow until 4 p.m.
