ApprenticeOhio provided nearly $1.6M in training and tool reimbursements for 698 apprentices
Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) Director Matt Damschroder announced recently that the agency provided nearly $1.6 million to 75 ApprenticeOhio employers and sponsors through a year-long training and tool reimbursement grant program. This assistance helped 698 apprentices receive training.
“We were thrilled to offer this funding to help employers continue investing in the state’s workforce,” Damschroder said. “Apprenticeships are an excellent career pathway for many. Apprentices earn while they learn, they avoid student loan debt and, when they complete their programs, they earn an average of $72,000 a year.”
Ohio ranks third in the nation and first in the Midwest in the number apprentices, with more than 20,000 enrolled. ODJFS oversees ApprenticeOhio, which registers programs that meet national criteria for quality and safety. Each ApprenticeOhio program is run by a sponsor: usually an employer, a group of employers or a labor/management committee.
Apprentices learn skills needed for a job in the sponsor’s industry through at least 2,000 hours of structured on-the-job training and 144 hours of classroom training, typically at a local college or university.
The reimbursement grants were made possible by a federal “Building State Capacity to Expand Apprenticeship through Innovation” grant. In the most recent round of funding, sponsors and employers could receive up to $2,500 per apprentice for up to 50 apprentices. Previous rounds provided funding for up to 10 apprentices.
Ohio has 319 occupations that offer apprenticeships, in fields as diverse as aerospace, construction, energy, health care, manufacturing, computer programming and more. For more information, visit Apprentice.Ohio.gov.
