GREENFIELD — The McClain Lady Tigers put together one of their better defensive efforts of the season.
McClain kept the Madison-Plains Lady Golden Eagles to one goal, while mixing in some offense for a 3-1 South Central Ohio League win Tuesday at McClain Field in Greenfield.
This was the third win of the season for the Lady Tigers, as all three wins have come at McClain Field.
"The girls worked today," McClain coach Luis J. Rivas said. "They give their all, all of the time. Our goal was to keep possession of the ball near the opposite team's goal and to finish. We didn't finish the other day, but tonight, we finished."
The first Lady Tiger goal came with 3:10 left in the first half with senior captain Sammy Rooks scoring a close goal near the net.
After pressure from the Lady Tigers on the offensive side in the second half, the Lady Tigers increased their lead to 2-0 with a short goal near the net by senior Gretta Reyer with 19:11 remaining.
On offense in the second half, McClain's Megan Mustard kept the pressure on MP by keeping the ball near the goal of the Lady Golden Eagles. Her persistence paid off by scoring the third goal of the match with 11:58 remaining, kicking the ball in the left corner of the net.
MP broke up the Lady Tiger shutout with a goal from Lady Golden Eagle senior midfielder Erin Phillips, cutting the MHS lead to 3-1 at the 7:08 mark of the second half. Her goal landed in the left side of the net.
There were other moments of the game that kept the Lady Tigers in the lead throughout the SCOL matchup.
One big moment in the first half happened with a spectacular defensive effort from the Lady Tigers.
With 50 seconds remaining in the first half, the McClain defense held the Lady Golden Eagles in check by keeping the ball out of the goal, keeping the score at 1-0. Part of that defensive effort included keeper Taylor Faulconer, Emily Booth, Felicity Peabody, Madison Bobbitt, Cynthia Wardlow and Lauren Starkey.
"We have had a lot of changes in our defense this season," Rivas said. "We had players returning tonight after being down, and we had to switch our centerback … we have a big disabled list right now.
"One thing that helps is Taylor's play as keeper … she gives our defense a lot of confidence and keeps them aggressive."
In the second half, Faulconer kept the score at 1-0 around the 24-minute mark with a big save at goal. Faulconer finished with six saves.
"Taylor's play was outstanding," Rivas said.
MHS outshot MP 14-7 in the 80-minute match.
"The girls are having fun right now, and tonight we finally won," Rivas said.
GAME NOTES: With 3:50 left in the match, the official handed out double yellow cards with MP getting one for jewelry, which is improper equipment, and McClain getting one for "clapping" during the yellow card … MP keeper Abby Oravec made a leaping save in the first half at goal after the ball bounced off the top bar of the goal.
