Hillsboro Christian Academy win two; Storer new HCA record holder

WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE — Both the Hillsboro Christian Academy varsity teams earned a victory Jan. 4 against the Fayette Christian School’s varsity teams. The HCA Lady Crusaders defeated the FCS Lady Crusaders, 32-25. The HCA Crusaders defeated the FCS Crusaders, 56-42.

The HCA Crusaders were led in scoring by Kellin Storer with 16 points, Bryson Willey with 14 points and Hayden Tong with 12 points. Storer broke the HCA career points record during the game, surpassing former HCA star Briar Bourne. The FCS Crusaders were led in scoring by Brady Bumpus with 18 points and Jake Crichton with 11 points.

The HCA Crusaders took an early 16-9 lead in the first. Willey led HCA with eight points in the first quarter. Storer, Tong, Connor Henderson and Colton Boggess each scored two points for HCA in the opening quarter.

Tong added six points to his total in the second quarter. Willey, Storer and Jonah Brannon each scored two in the second quarter. The HCA Crusaders went into the half ahead 28-18.

Storer surpassed the HCA record in the third quarter, giving him 736 points in his HCA career and the new school record. Storer scored five points in the third, a three-point basket that tied the record, then a two-point basket on a fast break to take the lead. Tong, Willey, Henderson and Titus Howsman each scored two points in the third quarter for HCA.

Both teams scored 15 points in the final quarter. Storer added seven points to his total in the fourth, Brannon added four and Willey and Tong each added two to their totals. The HCA Crusaders won the game, 56-42.

The HCA Crusaders improve to 8-4 on the season. They next take on the Landmark Eagles on Jan. 5 at home.

The HCA Lady Crusaders were led in scoring by Lisa VanZant and Annie Henderson each with nine points and Emma Korte with eight. The FCS Lady Crusaders were led in scoring by Scarlett Cockerill with nine points, Shelby Bumpus with eight points and Corbyn Nolt with seven points.

The HCA Lady Crusaders jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, going ahead 10-5. Henderson led HCA in the first quarter with five points. Freshman Kari Flowers scored three points in the first, with Korte supplying the remaining two points.

Both teams played tremendous defense in the second quarter as the two teams combined for five points. The HCA Lady Crusaders scored three points, two from VanZant and one from Flowers.

VanZant led the HCA Lady Crusaders in the third with six points. Henderson and Korte combined for six points in the third. The FCS Lady Crusaders added 10 points in the third quarter. The score going into the fourth was 25-17 in favor of HCA.

The FCS Lady Crusaders made no shots from the field in the fourth quarter, but scored eight points from the free-throw line on 20 attempts. Korte led HCA with four points in the fourth quarter. Freshman Zayla Bourne shot two free throws in the fourth, sinking both late in the game to secure the victory for HCA.

The HCA Lady Crusaders add another victory to their season with the 32-25 win over FCS. The Lady Crusaders improve to 7-5 on the season and will face Ross County Christian Academy at home on Jan. 16.
