3 Highland County runners finish in Top 5 at Aaron Reed Memorial

CHILLICOTHE — Fairfield's Michael Mangus and Blake Hildebrant, along with McClain's Caleb Mootispaw, all finished in the Top 5 Saturday at the Aaron Reed Memorial at Southeastern High School.

Reed was killed on Aug. 3, 2005, when his amphibious assault vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device in Iraq. The attack on members of his Lima Company also claimed five other lives. Reed’s family and friends created the memorial race to not only pay tribute to him and other service members, but also to raise money for the Aaron Reed Memorial Scholarship Fund and Blue Star Mothers organization.

Winning the event was Paint Valley's Daniel Gardner with a time of 16:32.
 
The cross-country meet also had the Fairfield Lions winning with 59 points, tallying a total time of 1:31.19. The McClain Tigers came in fourth place with 119 points and a total time of 1:35.08.

Leading the Fairfield team was Mangus, who finished second with a time of 16:54.  Hildebrant was fifth with a time of 7:57.

Also running for the Lions were: John Cain, 12th, 18:33; Wyatt Crothers, 19th, 18:43; Dustin Willey, 29th, 19:12; Brant Huff, 47th, 19:58; Matthew Leach (20:33), Gage Montgomery (23:14), Jacob Dalton (23:36), Layne Irvin (25:03) and Alec Irvin 32:59.

For the Tigers, Mootispaw led the Tigers with a fourth-place finish with a time of 17:45. Chris Eltman was 24th (18:52), Isaiah Isaacs 25th (18:59), Jeremiah Savage 30th (19:13), Evan Onusko 54th (20:19). Other racers included Daniel Addington (21:10), Adomas Fabin (21:35), Tristan Smith (22:01), Micah Mootispaw (22:54), Daniel Mottie (27:05), Ryan Bennett (28:38) and Joey Jones (38:30).

In the girls event, Fairfield's Kaitlin Evans was 18th with a time of 23:45. McClain's Sarah Davis was 26th at 24:20. Also for FHS, Brenna Simmons was 39th with a time of 26:09.

The Fairfield Varsity High School Boys Cross-Country team captured the title at the Wilmington HS Cross Country Invitational Sept. 13.

FHS defeated three Division I schools, Wilmington, Hamilton Ross and Franklin.  The team also improved its SHL record to 12-0.
 
Fairfield scored 56 points for the first-place spot. They were followed by Hamilton Ross 64, Wilmington 70, Eastern Brown 131, Trenton Edgewood 142, Jamestown Greeneview 145, Franklin 145, East Clinton 148, Blanchester 189 and Clinton-Massie DNF.
 
Michael Mangus won the event with a time of 17:14. Blake Hildebrant was second at 17:41.

Also for FHS were: John Cain, 14th, 19:25; Wyatt Crothers, 18th, 19:39; Dustin Willey, 21st, 19:54.
 
The Fairfield HS girls had three finishers. Kaitlin Evans, 19th, 25:22; Heather Cox, 28th, 26:31; and Haley Bobb, 49th, 31:25.[[In-content Ad]]
