    The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation estimates that there are nearly 1 million people living with Parkinson’s in the United States. In light of April being National Parkinson’s Awareness Month, Home Helpers of Hillsboro is educating the local community on tips for families who are providing care for a loved one with Parkinson’s disease.

  • Anna's Army to host dodge ball tournament March 30
    Anna's Army will be hosting a dodge ball tournament to help raise funds toward battling Cystic Fibrosis. The event will be held Friday, March 30 at 6 p.m. at the Highland County Family YMCA.

    The sweet smell of the bees lingered with me as I took off my bee veil and put away my tools. What a perfect afternoon it had been. I know with certainty that I had not been stung even once, and I truly believe that I had not squashed a single bee. I smiled. I know that I have learned a lot from the bees. I feel privileged to simply "bee" among them.

    Patty Cummings was awarded the 2012 Highland County Friend of 4-H at the 4-H Officer, Member and Advisor Conference on Monday, March 19.
  • Sarah Young honored for volunteer service
    Sarah Young has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a state-level Certificate of Excellence from the 2012 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Young was nominated for this award by Highland County 4-H and was recognized at the 4-H Officer, Member and Advisor Conference on March 19.
  • Local competitors earn awards at 25th annual Beef Expo
    More than 30,000 beef industry enthusiasts gathered in Columbus on March 16-18 for the 2012 Ohio Beef Expo. In its 25th year, the Expo is hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen's Association (OCA) and held at the Ohio Expo Center. The Expo provides an annual opportunity for those in the beef industry in Ohio, and across the nation, to learn and enhance their businesses and operations through exhibition and sales.

    These days it seems as if the price of everything is going up. When fuel prices skyrocketed to over $2 a gallon, we all felt the impact. Now, gas prices are over $3 a gallon on average, and we seem to be numb. We just have to submit to the prices because we cannot do anything about it. So, now that we have adapted to high gas prices, utility rates are going through the roof.

    UCAN Highland County Transport's low-cost spay/neuter program will hold drop-offs and pick-ups for pets on the fourth Wednesday and Thursday of the month at Peace Lutheran Church, 231 Harry Sauner Road.
