William Cabell Bourne, 91, of Leesburg, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at his home.

He was born Dec. 4, 1931 in Lancaster, Ky., the son of the late Cabell and Irene (Casey) Bourne.

He proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. Upon returning home, he worked for Kier and Chaney Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Company under the G.I. Bill and the Cincinnati Milling Machine Company. He spent most of his career, however, working for the government – first, at the SAC base in Wilmington, until its closing, then went to Wright-Patterson AFB Aerospace Lab, where he went into research. He worked for the government for 37 years with nine more years with a consulting firm, working in the same capacity.

He will be lovingly remembered by his family for his kindness and gentle nature. He and his wife provided a lovely home, which they built with their own hands. They spent many years restoring and adding on to the Worthington home on Centerfield Road near Leesburg.

Mr. Bourne is survived by his wife, Carmen (Stroemer) Bourne, whom he married Aug. 20, 1955 in Hillsboro. He is also survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Brian Johnson; three grandchildren, Timothy Johnson, Michael Johnson and Tyler Bourne; a great-granddaughter, Avelynn Bourne; a sister, Ruth Elliott; and a brother, Bradley (Janie) Bourne.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Steven Bourne.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 1 p.m. at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Burial with military honors presented by the Highland County Veterans Honor Guard will follow in the Resthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
