Sponsors needed for 2012 Rocky Fork Thunder

After a one-year absence due to funding issues, the popular hydroplane boat races are set to return to Rocky Fork Lake Sept. 15-16.
Event chairman Dean Armstrong told The Highland County Press this week that with just a few more corporate sponsors, this year's races are on.
"We're working on sponsorships and publicity right now," Armstrong said. "If we raise another $9,000, we'll be fine. I feel confident we'll have the races this year."
With top speeds on the water of close to 150 mph, Armstrong said the hydroplane races are popular for drivers and fans alike.
"Drivers love to race on Rocky Fork Lake," he said. "We've had 18 official world records at Rocky Fork Lake, with another six to eight records that weren't reported because those drivers didn't win their races – even though they did break the record."
In fact, Armstrong himself once broke a world speed record at RFL, only to finish in second place.
This year, the event will host approximately 55 high-quality boats, Armstrong said.
Previously called Thunder in the Hills, this year's event is Rocky Fork Thunder (www.rockyforkthunder.com) and sponsored by the Rocky Fork Thunder Racing Association, in conjunction with the American Power Boat Association.
Past races have attracted drivers and pit crews from Florida, Texas, New York, Georgia and Canada.
The race has a positive financial impact on area businesses, too, Armstrong said.
"Race teams are loyal and they are loyal to event sponsors," he said. "They'll visit restaurants, buy picnic supplies, fuel, etc."
General admission is free to watch the races off East Shore Drive. Pit passes and VIP passes also are available.
