The Week 2 non-conference game was tied at 21 when halftime arrived, but the Paint Valley Bearcats were unable to keep up with a strong Pleasant Spartans squad, eventually falling by a 43-21 score on Friday, Sept. 6 in a non-conference road contest.

PV (1-1) was not only tied at halftime, but in the third frame they trailed by just seven points. In the fourth, they were unable to battle back, but not for lack of effort.

“We were down 28-21 at midfield and didn’t convert a third-and-4 play,” head coach Pete Hollon said. “We were still down 35-21 early in the fourth and had the ball at their 8-yard line, and we threw an interception.

“Overall, I’m very pleased with the effort, but we have to bottle it now and move forward. It was quite the atmosphere, and I’m glad I put our kids in it. Hopefully we will grow from the experience.”

PVHS quarterback Bryce Newland finished 15-of-24 for 179 yards with no touchdowns and one interceptions. He also had nine rushes for 51 yards and two touchdown runs.

Brayden Ison led the Bearcats in rushing with six carries for 103 yards and one touchdown, averaging 17.1 yards per carry. Iann Cockrell totaled nine carries for 34 yards.

Cruz McFadden led the Bearcats with four receptions for 69 yards, followed by Dane Miller with four receptions for 42 yards. Caleb Adams totaled three receptions for 30 yards.

Also for the Bearcats, Andrew Walker finished with one reception for 15 yards, Ison had one catch for 19 yards and Cockrell caught one pass for two yards.

PV kicker Jackson Williams was a perfect 3-for-3 in extra-point attempts.

Next for the Bearcats is a home game on Friday, Sept. 13 against Newark Catholic (1-1).
