The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs lost in the Division III SE District Sectional Semifinals on Monday night, falling to the host Coal Grove (Dawson-Bryant) Hornets, 66-58.

The game saw LCHS and the Hornets play close in the opening frame as Coal Grove led Lynchburg-Clay, 16-12 at the conclusion of the opening frame. In the opening quarter, the Mustangs led early by a 3-2 score (off a 3-pointer from Brady Chisman), but from that point on it was the Hornets leading the way of the first quarter.

In the opening frame, LC’s points also included four points by Bryce Binkley, three points by Ian Waits and two points by Kyle Bennington.

Lynchburg-Clay opened the second quarter with a jumper and three-point play by Binkley for a 17-16 lead by the Mustangs. Coal Grove answered with a 3-pointer of their own, but that feat was equaled with a 3-pointer by Waits for a 20-19 lead by LCHS with 5:28 left in the first half.

The remainder of the second frame saw the Hornets buzz their way to the lead at halftime, as they built a 33-24 advantage. For LCHS in the second frame, Waits totaled five points in the frame, while Binkley also had a five-point second quarter. Also in the frame, Chisman scored two points.

LCHS was outscored 14-12 in the third quarter, with the Mustangs having seven points in the quarter scored by Chisman (including a 3-pointer), while Binkley also sank a 3-pointer, and two points were scored by Logan Shope.

Though LCHS trailed by 11 points after three quarters, as Coal Grove led 47-36 after three frames, the final eight minutes of play saw the Mustangs scored 22 more points.

LCHS in the fourth quarter battled back by starting the quarter with two points by Noah Miller, then there were two points by Waits.

From there, Shope made two free throws, then the rest of the quarter scoring was all Waits, as he finished the frame with an 18-point quarter.

Waits in the fourth frame made two 3-pointers, three two-point baskets, and he was 6-of-6 from the free-throw line.

At one point in the fourth quarter, Waits scored nine consecutive points for the Mustangs, and in that span he brought LCHS back to within four points of tying the score, as LCHS trailed 55-51 with 2:17 left in regulation.

For the game, Waits finished with 26 points, as he made five two-point baskets, three 3-pointers and he was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Also finishing the game in double-figure scoring was Chisman with 12 points (three two-point baskets, two 3-pointers). Totaling eight points each for the game were Shope and Binkley, and scoring two points each were Bennington and Miller.

As a team, the Mustangs totaled 15 two-point baskets, six 3-pointers and were 10-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Braxton Horne led Coal Grove with 15 points, and Perry Kingsley finished with 14 points. Also in double-figure scoring was Tait Matney with 11 points for the Hornets.

As a team, the Hornets had 18 two-point baskets, seven 3-pointers and they were 9-of-16 from the free-throw line.

The Mustangs end their season at 6-16 overall, and they were 5-8 in the SHAC standings.
