The McClain Lady Tigers achieved program history on Monday by advancing to the Division II SE District Tournament for the first time.

They did so with a strong performance in the sectional round in the event held at Jaycees Golf Course, placing sixth overall out of 18 teams in the event, with the top six teams, plus the top six individuals not on a qualifying team, advancing to the district round.

MHS finished with a score of 422, taking the sixth spot by one stroke as Reedsville Eastern was seventh place overall with a score of 423 and Eastern Brown was eighth with a team score of 425.

The Lady Tigers were led by Kendall Pollard with a score of 97 in the 18-hole event. Pollard shot a 51 on her first nine holes, and on the second nine holes, she finished with a 46.

Bryn Karnes scored a 99 (55, 44), and she was followed by Erika Martin 110 (47, 63), Elissa Grate 116 (63, 53) and Bri Weller 116 (61, 55).

"I'm so happy for the kids. It was a tough, long day, in very hot conditions,” MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. “They dug deep and reached one of their goals this season. I couldn't be prouder as a coach."

Also in the event was Fairfield, who finished in 13th place with a score of 461. Fairfield’s Rachel Schuler — who has to return Tuesday for a sudden death playoff with Logan Elm junior Lynne Dale — led the Lady Lions with a score of 91 (47, 44).

Also for the Lady Lions, scores included: Caitlyn Melson (112), Alexis Tompkins (125), Chelsea Hester (133) and Mia Keeton (147).

The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs placed 18th overall with four golfers in the event. Their scores included: Taylor McLaughlin (123), Tia McConnaughey (136), Madi Mugnaini (145) and Grace Brownsberger (171).

The district round will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at the Upper Lansdowne Golf Course at 9 a.m.
