"The Constitution is the guide which I will never abandon." – George Washington

By Second District Rep. Brad Wenstrup

Our Founding Fathers embarked on this incredible project in 1776 when they signed the Declaration of Independence and swore their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor in creating this new nation.

But their work was not done by declaring the self-evident truth that all men are created equal. To build our nation and frame the very system of government our republic follows today, the founding fathers crafted and passed the Constitution 234 years ago on Sept. 17, 1787.

This Constitution continued America’s revolutionary founding by enshrining a government that is responsible to we the people, creating a careful system of checks and balances across our three branches of government to preserve liberty.

I think President Calvin Coolidge got it right when he observed that "To live under the American Constitution is the greatest political privilege that was ever accorded to the human race."

Let’s continue to live up to our Constitution, and work to protect the republic we’ve been entrusted to keep.

Happy Constitution Day and Week.
